A new consensus statement provides guidance on how patients with type 1 diabetes can safely exercise and manage their glucose levels.
The document, published in the Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology, provides recommendations on glucose targets for safe exercise, as well as recommended adjustments to nutrition and insulin doses to protect patients from exercise-related glucose excursion.
The document includes tables on carbohydrate requirements for aerobic activity and exercise and glucose management strategies based on various starting glucose levels. It also includes a decision tree on aerobic exercise and mixed (aerobic and anaerobic) activities that last at least 30 minutes.
